Travel and Terrain Advice

Watch out for storm slabs at very high elevations. Be especially careful on slopes where snow that has been moved by northerly winds can be loaded. It is important to avoid terrain that is difficult to support snow accumulation, such as convex or isolated terrains. On the other hand, at very low elevations, glide avalanche danger continues. Avoid staying under slopes with glide cracks. The recent rainfall has caused the snow to melt, so please take this into account when setting your tour route. The weather is forecast to improve. Have a good day.

Avalanche Problem

At very high elevations there could have been 10-20 cm of snowfall. Also, since yesterday afternoon, there has been a continuous northerly wind at higher elevations. Watch out for slabs that have formed on the downwind side.

Even if rainfall stops, snowmelt will continue at the bottom of the snowpack. Try to avoid slopes with glide cracks. Also, do not stagnate under them.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (26th), several size 1-2 glide avalanches were observed on slopes below 800 m elevation.

Snowpack

Yesterday (26th), about 20 mm of rain fell during the day at the foot of the mountains. As a result, snow melted and glide cracks expanded at lower elevations. Yesterday afternoon, the pressure pattern changed to a winter one and temperatures dropped. However, due to the amount of rainfall, we need to be vigilant for glide avalanches on slopes with glide cracks. At very high elevations, it appears to have been snowfall, but there is uncertainty as to its quantity. Please check the amount and its bonding with the old snow on site.

Weather

Today, cold and moist air is expected to affect the area at first, but high pressure is expected to gradually build up. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly and northeasterly winds, cloudy, and sunny from early afternoon, with a daytime high of 10 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with 2 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours.
