Travel and Terrain Advice

Watch out for storm slabs on extreme steep slopes on southerly orientations. Be especially careful in the Tanigawa-dake area, where there are many high elevation zones and extreme steep slopes where bonding is difficult to proceed. Beware of inducements from areas where the slope changes abruptly, from open areas with few trees, or from areas where the snow cover is thin. Be aware of the possibility of avalanches from large start zones overhead even if you yourself are in an area with a low slope. Even if the avalanche is small in size, there are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase the damage. Care should also be taken to avoid falling into gully. Warmer daytime temperatures and sunshine are in the forecast. Be aware of the possibility of loose snow avalanches from large southerly steep slopes.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (23rd), several naturally occurring slab avalanches of size 3-3.5 were observed on southeasterly slopes near 1600m in the Tanigawadake area within the past two days, and on the 22nd, several human-triggered slab avalanches of size 2.5 were reported on steep east to southeast facing slopes near 1300m.

Snowpack

About 40-80 cm of snowfall from past stormy weather is on top of the settled old snow, and the settling is gradually progressing. In the Tanigawadake area, crusts are observed at the boundary of this snowfall, and the upper part of the crusts is faceting and bonding is weak, and slab avalanches are occurring, so care should be taken in bonding. There are no reports of significant fragility observed in the middle to lower part of the snowpack.

Weather

As of 5:00, the temperature at Amedas Fujiwara is 0.3°C. No snowfall in the past 12 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting clear skies and cloudy skies from early afternoon due to a frontal system extending from Huachu to the south coast of Honshu, which will be affected by moist air.
