Travel and Terrain Advice

Variability in surface conditions is prominent across the region at present. Reports suggest in north of the zone the curst is buried around 60cm whilst in the south it is still being felt in steep terrain. As reported the latest wind event is likely to have left firm conditions on northerly aspects pushing people onto lee slopes for easier terrain travel. Constant assessment of what is in front of you is needed as conditions will change rapidly depending the aspect and elevations you are on. Glide crack releases are hard to predict but failures been observed recently, avoidance of terrain below these cracks is suggested.

Avalanche Problem

Stronger than expected northerly winds over the previous few days have re distributed snow on lee aspects. Look for signs of fresh wind pressed surface conditions at higher elevations. Protected areas and cross loaded features in the alpine should be areas of concern and investigated.

概要

Avalanche

A number of glide avalanche releases have been observed across the region at various elevations and aspects. On the 27th a size 1.5 avalanche was observed on Mt Yotei at 1250m on a southerly aspect. This was fresh wind deposited snow running on the previous curst surface. The avalanche was 20m wide and ran for 100m.

Snowpack

Variable conditions exist across the region. The latest wind evet will have stripped the surface on northerly windward slopes at higher elevations leaving an firm icy surface. In the treeline we expect to find softer snow and better conditions however in the south of the region the buried frozen crust can still be felt in steep terrain.

Weather

A short lived high pressure system will cross Hokkaido on Thursday bringing settled weather with low winds and periods of sunshine. As we move towards the weekend we expect to see an increase in snowfall with possibility of gale force westerly winds in the coming days.
