Travel and Terrain Advice

Be alert for wind slabs formed by strong winds. Even a small windslab can have serious consequences if there is a "terrain trap" below its slope. Strong winds can affect even the forests, so pay attention to the snow conditions and the slope angles, even in the forested areas. Although a certain amount of snow has fallen, there is still very little snow at lower elevations compared to previous years. Please consider tour routes carefully.

Avalanche Problem

Strong winds are still continuing, with very strong westerly winds above. Even below treeline, extreme caution should be exercised on slopes where wind-driven snow has accumulated.

There are places in the tree line where the winds are lessening and the snow is more likely to accumulate. If it is steep enough there, it is a day for prudent decisions.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (27th), several size 1.5 wind slab avalanches caused by cornice collapse were observed. There were also reports of size 1-1.5 wind slab avalanches caused by ski cuts. Whumpfing sounds were also reported in the below treeline.

Snowpack

Snowfall due to the passage of a low pressure system on February 25 and the strong winter pressure that followed resulted in a cumulative total of about 60 cm in the upper part of the below treeline. This new snow is being moved by extremely strong winds. Melt-Freeze crusts are exposed in areas exposed to the wind and deeply accumulated in some areas. The effects of yesterday's winds are even in the forest, forming wind slabs in terrain pockets.

Weather

Today, the pressure pattern of high in the west and low in the east will gradually loosen, but is expected to be affected by cold air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, then southerly winds, snow or rain, cloudy from early afternoon, and daytime high temperatures of 7 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -6 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with 11 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours and 29 cm in the past 24 hours.
