Travel and Terrain Advice

Avalanche danger conditions are low at this time. As with the previous day, watch out for unstable slabs on extremely shaped terrain. Also be alert for "terrain traps" below them. When visibility is poor, it is harder to notice the hazardous elements around you. On the other hand, at lower elevations, snow cover remains low. Be on the lookout for hazardous elements other than avalanches (e.g., holes in stream bottoms).

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were observed yesterday (4th).

Snowpack

New snow in the snowpack surface layer, which was composed of weak snowfall that lasted for the past several days, is settling. The cold air inflow is keeping the temperature low and the snow is staying dry.

Weather

Today, a low pressure system is expected to move eastward along the southern coast of Honshu while developing. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting easterly winds, cloudy skies, snow or rain in the evening, and daytime high temperatures of 3 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu area of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -9 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), and no new snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
