Travel and Terrain Advice

With wind speeds lowering and the possibility of broken sunshine in the coming days the desire to venture into the alpine will increase. Currently, there is a wind slab hazard in the treeline and alpine which appears the be reactive tosingle-person loads. Conservative terrain and travel decisions will need to be taken in the coming days as these wind slabs across southerly and easterly aspects overlie low density snow and a crust providing a bed surface. Allow the upper snowpack time to settle before exposing yourself to high consequence slopes.

Avalanche Problem

Reactive wind slab can be found on lee slopes. Avoid slopes with a smooth wind pressed surface and make conservative terrain decisions until the latest new snow has time to settle.

Storm slabs will remain at lower elevations, especially in the north of the region where new snow totals are higher.

概要

Avalanche

A size 1 stiff windslab was triggered by a person skinning up a south westerly aspect at 700m on Mt Shiribetsu on the 26/01/24. The failure was on a density change below the slab that is suspected of running on a melt freeze crust. The crown had a depth of 5-50cm and was 20m wide and ran for approximately 150m.

Snowpack

Over 100cm of new snow has fallen in the north of the region in the latter part of the week. Combined with gale northwest winds this has produced a wind slab on lee slopes that now sits on top of a density inversion within the latest new snow.Northerly aspects have been scoured and stripped by the recent wind event whilst a buried crust can be found in the south.

Weather

Over the coming days, we expect to see the wind speed lower to moderate at upper elevations as the recent dominant low-pressure system moves eastward. We can expect light snowfall and a northerly flow over the weekend with the possibility of broken sunshine.
