Travel and Terrain Advice

Very dangerous avalanche conditions. In Alpine and Treeline terrain, it is not recommended to stay in avalanche terrain. Below Treeline, there is still not enough snow, bushes, and exposed rocks, making it difficult to move in the first place. In addition, the narrow stream terrain may not be fully covered, and even small avalanches can be deeply buried. Today, fresh snow areas in the ski resort are recommended. When doing so, please observe the areas where skiing is allowed. Also, even if you are in a controlled area, if you see someone falling in the fresh snow, whether it is a fellow skier or another rider, be concerned and take action to help them. Have a happy holiday.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday due to very poor weather, few people traveling into the mountain. Shooting cracks were observed on wind-affected slopes, suggesting the formation of Windslabs.

Snowpack

A series of snowfalls that began in the afternoon of the 20th have reached 80 cm in the southern part of the area and 130 cm in the northern part by yesterday evening. The amount is estimated to be even higher in the higher elevation areas. Strong westerly winds have also redistributed the snow, creating a deeper layer on lee slopes. This snowpack is on top of the ground in the lower elevations and on top of the snow that fell on the morning of the 17th above the Below Treeline; the vulnerability there is unconfirmed in the higher areas as the Melt-Freeze layer formed by the rainfall of the early morning of the 15th-16th is buried beneath the snowpack on the 17th.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts for northern Nagano Prefecture that the winter pressure pattern will gradually loosen and high pressure will cover the area, but it will be affected by cold air and a pressure trough. As a result, it will snow in the north, but it will become cloudy before noon and clear at night. Snow is expected to continue along the mountains in the north. A maximum temperature of 3°C (418 m elevation) is forecast. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 750 m), the temperature is -4.8°C (as of 5:00 am) and 10 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
