Travel and Terrain Advice

Dangerous avalanche conditions. Beware of triggering on the steep slopes of newly forming storm slabs. In addition, human-triggered avalanches continued to occur until the 23rd. Be aware that this instability is localized, hard to find, and persistent. Beware of triggering from extremely steep slopes with thin snowpack. Due to the hardness of the slab and bed surface, when triggered, the fracture line will spread significantly, increasing the size of the avalanche. We recommend adhering to the action principle of reducing the time spent in avalanche start zones, tracks, and runout zones. There are many exposed "terrain traps" such as rocks and gullies that can increase the damage of even small avalanches. Be careful of collisions with rocks thinly concealed by snow.

概要

Avalanche

No reports of avalanches were observed yesterday (24th) due to poor visibility; on the 23rd, a slab avalanche size 2 was triggered while climbing up the ridge on the northwest slope of Masago-dake.

Snowpack

In the Murodo area, there have been 30-60 cm of new snowfall due to the stormy weather since yesterday, and attention should be paid to the bonding of the snowpack within the stormy weather. Snowfall from past stormy days settled well and bonded well, but local instability remained, triggering avalanches from areas with thin snowpack. Caution is needed as the load from new snowfall is applied to these areas. Melt-Freeze crusts have formed on the surface of the steep southerly slopes, which have been buried by the snowfall since yesterday.

Weather

The temperature at 2380m as of 6:00 am is -11.5℃, and 30-60cm of snow has fallen since yesterday. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the winter pressure pattern will gradually loosen, but cold air is expected to affect the area, so it is forecast to be cloudy at the foot of the mountain, with occasional snow or rain until morning.
