The snowpack is in its "spring cycle". Today's weak sunshine means that the snowpack will not be as loose as it was yesterday, but the overall high temperatures are still in effect. Please be vigilant for slopes with glide cracks and leftover snow blocks. Weather conditions are on the way to worsen as a low pressure system approaches. If rain begins to fall, raise the alert for glide avalanches even higher. Snow bridges are fragile and gully cracks are developing. Conditions are more diverse and hazardous at lower elevations than at higher elevations.
A snow block collapse was reported yesterday (March 16). No new avalanches have been reported.
The snowpack is repeatedly Melt-Freezing and Freezing, isothermalizing and strengthening. On the very high elevation, true northern slopes, there is dry snow, but the rest of the snow is wet or wet. At the base of the mountains, the snow is melting.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, with some morning and evening showers, and a high of 9°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
