Travel and Terrain Advice

Note the newly formed storm slab. It is a good idea to check the strength of the interface between new and old snow by using small, safe, convex terrain. Since it is just after a snowfall, even if it feels stable, reduce the slope angles and avoid isolated terrains and other terrains with extreme terrain features where the snowpack can easily become unstable. Continuing to follow basic behaviors such as skiing one person at a time and stopping in a safe position is very important for avalanche safety.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanche bulletin was observed yesterday (Feb. 13).

Snowpack

Below Treeline, new snow (20-30 cm) from yesterday is on top of the snow surface, which is wet or moist from rainfall. This new snow is being deposited under the influence of north-to-northwest winds. At lower elevations below the Treeline, no problematic instability has been observed below the mid-snowpack.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, snow, and a maximum temperature of 3°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
