Travel and Terrain Advice

With better weather today, it is easy to become bolder and step out further into the backcountry. Careful assessment is still recommended if planning to travel into avalanche terrain. Once again, more snow and more avalanche danger exist in the northern area.

概要

Avalanche

Wind slab avalanches size one; skier triggered cross-loaded feature on Shiribetsu. Avalanche observed on Chisenupuri above 1000m.

Snowpack

24-hour snow totals still favor the Kiroro area, with Otaru receiving another 22 cm of snow. Much of this fell early this morning. Kiroro’s snow stake has shown 10 cm since 17:00 yesterday evening. Kutchan received 10 cm in the last 24 hours with nothing in the last 6 hours. The Rusutsu area got the least amount of new snow, receiving 4 cm. Heights of storm snow totals vary significantly. Buried crusts, surface facets, and surface hoar (buried 1/28) exist especially on sheltered open terrain. Graupel and other weak layers exist within the new storm snow. The mid and lower snowpack is well bonded to itself but continues to glide on the ground, opening cracks.

Weather

High Pressure controls the weather today. Winds on top of Annupuri have switched to Northerly and wind speeds have dropped. Partly cloudy skies and light flurries this morning are to be expected. Light winds shift to the west later today. The freezing level remains below the surfaces. Colder temperatures in the alpine today. Fair weather tonight, light and variable winds with low temperatures around -10 C.
