Travel and Terrain Advice

When the bonding strength of the surface snow has decreased, be on the lookout for wet loose snow avalanches. Wet snow is very heavy and can easily scoop people off their feet. If there are "terrain traps" such as cliffs or trees below the slope, the consequences can be grave. In addition, the snowpack in the mountains is in the process of melting, and glide cracks have been occurring and expanding even at higher elevations. Consider the possibility of cracks on convex terrain where you cannot see the end of the terrain. There have been incidents where people have lost their footing in size 1 wet loose snow avalanches and fallen into glide cracks. If you pick the right time and slope, this is a good day to enjoy some pleasant spring snow runs. Bring sunscreen and plenty of water and have a great spring day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (5th), several wet loose snow avalanches of size 1-1.5 were observed in the below treeline.

Snowpack

The AMeDAS at the foot of the mountain recorded 13.1°C (13:00) yesterday and has remained above 6°C since then. Higher temperatures are forecast for today than yesterday. Due in part to these high temperatures, snow is melting rapidly below treeline. At higher elevations, the snowpack is entering its spring Melt-Freeze cycle. Slopes that were hard and frozen in the morning can be skied with comfortable corn snow during the day.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, later northerly winds, cloudy, morning to early afternoon, sunny, and daytime highs of 20 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is 5.9 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.).
