Travel and Terrain Advice

When the sun comes in and the bonding strength of the snow on the snow cover surface layer is reduced, be on the lookout for loose snow avalanches in point-generating wet snow avalanches. Weakly bonded snow can occur even in the forest if the slope is sufficiently steep. In addition, the snow is wet and very heavy, so it easily scoots under one's feet. If there are "terrain traps" such as cliffs or trees below the slope, the consequences can be serious. Also, the slopes are hard and frozen in the morning, so be careful of slipping and falling.

概要

Avalanche

A size 2 glide avalanche was observed yesterday (4th).

Snowpack

Below treeline, high temperatures and rainfall have sufficiently wetted the snowpack, further increasing the overall density of the snowpack. The expansion of glide cracks has also been observed, and the danger of glide avalanches and snow block collapses continues. Near the main ridge, temperatures are slightly negative and winds are light.

Weather

Today, high pressure is expected to prevail, but the area will be affected by a pressure trough and moist air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, then southerly winds, cloudy, sunny before noon, rainy in places in the evening, and a daytime high of 15 °C (59 °F) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is 3.7 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.).
