At lower elevations, high temperatures and rainfall have increased the risk of glide avalanches. Pass quickly under terrains with glide cracks and do not stop there. In addition, the snow surface layer is saturated with water, so wet loose snow avalanches are very heavy. Such avalanches can also occur in forests. When they are swept away and hit trees, the added weight of the snow can have serious consequences. Today, the forecast is for high temperatures similar to yesterday, so please pay attention to snow conditions during the day. A number of loose snow avalanches of size 1-1.5 were observed yesterday (30th). There were also glide avalanches of size 1-2.
Snowpack
Due to the high daily temperatures and rainfall, the entire snowpack is well wetted and reduced in intensity at lower elevations. Glide cracks on cliff-like terrain are extremely unstable. Even at higher elevations, loose snow avalanches caused by wet snow were frequent yesterday on very steep slopes due to solar radiation and high temperatures. With the passage of the pressure trough, rain is currently falling, which serves to reinforce the above mentioned snowpack trends.
Weather
Today, high pressure is expected to prevail, but the area will be affected by a pressure trough and moist air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, then northerly winds, sunny, sometimes cloudy, rain in places until morning, and a daytime high of 18 °C (65 °F) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation in Hakuba, the temperature is 7.5 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.).
