Travel and Terrain Advice

High temperatures continue. Be on the lookout for glide avalanches. As you move down the valley route at the end of the tour, keep an eye out for steep terrains on either side. Pass quickly under slopes with glide cracks and do not stay there. Also, as the snow is melting, please consider the possibility that routes that were usable during the usual season may not be available. High temperatures are forecast for today as well as yesterday. Be careful of avalanches caused by wet snow. This type of avalanche is very heavy and even small ones can easily scoop you off your feet. Be sure to keep your attention above yourself. This will be a day of strong sunshine. Don't forget sunscreen and plenty of water. Have a good day.

In High Alpine, the temperature is slightly negative. Also, storms (westerly winds) are currently averaging over 20 m/s. Watch for unstable slabs remaining in terrain pockets.

概要

Avalanche

Several size 2 glide avalanches were observed yesterday (29th). In addition, a size 2.5 slab avalanche was observed at an elevation of 2,000 m on the adjacent Hakuba mountain range. This avalanche occurred when crusts buried in the upper layers of the snowpack formed a water surface to stop the rain that permeated the snowpack.

Snowpack

Snowpack is entering its spring cycle. Rainfall and high temperatures are also contributing to the snowmelt. Glide crack movement has been observed to be active, due in part to continued high temperatures. A vigilance for glide avalanches is warranted.

Weather

Today, high pressure will be moderately covering the area, but yellow dust is expected. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the west, slightly strong, then from the south, clear skies, and daytime high temperatures of 18 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 6 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new rainfall in the past 12 hours.
