Travel and Terrain Advice

The large, steep slopes that open to the south are in conditions that could result in destructive wet snow avalanches. Avoid entering slopes in that direction and at the same time consider whether there are any such slopes above you. In addition, increased glide crack movement has been reported as of yesterday. Be on the lookout for glide avalanches. Even if the rain stops in the coming days, the danger of glide avalanches will not diminish immediately. Great caution should be exercised throughout the day. Inexperienced groups are advised to stay within the ski area. Rain-washed ski courses are more runnable and enjoyable.

Use extreme caution in open glide cracks.

面発生湿雪雪崩 Wet slab

ベース画像

On steep slopes receiving solar radiation, the crust is buried in the upper part of snowpacks. This crust is the stopping point of the current rainfall, a condition that could cause a highly destructive wet slab avalanche.

Even in the forest, loose snow avalanches can occur. Also, watch out for large slopes.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (28th), several size 1-2 glide avalanches and size 1 loose snow avalanches and size 1 wet avalanches were observed at lower elevations.

Snowpack

Since yesterday until this morning, temperatures have been above 10°C at the foot of the mountain and rainfall has continued. Above, a very strong southerly wind has been blowing since yesterday afternoon. And today, high temperatures are predicted to be on par with yesterday. The overall snowpack at lower elevations and the strength of the snow surface layer at slightly higher elevations are greatly reduced.

Weather

Today, the area will be affected by low pressure but is expected to be moderately covered by high pressure in the afternoon. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds and rain at first, then clearing from midday, with a daytime high of 18 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 6 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.).
