Travel and Terrain Advice

It is advised to avoid avalanche terrain until this latest new snow has been given time to bond and gain strength. Avalanche activity has been reported during this storm cycle and we expect that reactive slab will be found on multiple aspects at present. A conservative cautious approach will be required if heading into the backcountry over the weekend and it is suggested to stay on low angle slopes.

Avalanche Problem

ストームスラブ Storm slab

We have received 20 to 30cm of new snow during the latest storm cycle. This new snow will be falling on a variable old snow surface that has been stripped back to a firm icy crust on windward aspects or onto lee slopes that have been loaded by the latest winds. It is likely avalanche will occur within the latest new snow until it has time to settle and bond.

The latest storm cycle arrived with strong south westerly winds on Friday resulting in the rapid formation of reactive wind slab on lee slopes. On Saturday we expect up to gale westerly winds that will redistribute this latest new snow onto easterly slopes creating wind slabs. Observations on Friday suggest these wind slabs have not bonded to the previous snow surface and are reactive to single person loads.

概要

Avalanche

In the north of the region numerous size 1 avalanches were observed on easterly aspects on the 1st of March. A remotely triggered size 1 on a north westerly aspect below tree line was also reported on the 1st.

Snowpack

With new snow and strong to gale force winds this latest new snow has created a reactive upper snow pack. The latest new snow appears to have not bonded well to the previous snow surface where it has fallen on a firm icy surface previously stripped by the recent wind event. Reports suggest slabs are running on a buried met freeze crust that is starting to break down.

Weather

Up to gale westerly winds are expected throughout Saturday with continued snowfall. Winds speeds will lower at the end of the week with snow flurries continuing during the coming days.
