Human-triggered avalanches continue to occur. This instability is localized and hard to spot, so caution is advised. Beware of triggering from extremely steep slopes with thin snow cover. Due to the hardness of the slab and bed surface, the fracture line can spread significantly and increase the size of the avalanche. It is recommended to follow the action principle of not staying in avalanche start zones, tracks, or runout zones for long periods of time. There are many exposed "terrain traps" such as rocks and gullies that can make even small avalanches more damaging. Snowfall with wind continues. Please be aware of any future changes in snowfall conditions.
Beware of induction from extremely steep slopes with thin snowpack.
Yesterday (23rd), there was a report of a size 2 slab avalanche on the northwest slope of Mt. Masago, which was triggered while climbing up the ridge.
Past stormy snowpack has settled well and bonded well, but local instability remains, triggering avalanches from areas where the snowpack is thin. This instability is difficult to detect and requires attention. Melt-Freeze crusts are forming on the surface of the steep southerly slopes. On top of this is a few centimeters of wind-driven snowfall from last night.
The temperature at 2380m as of 6:00 am is -1℃, about 1cm of snow has fallen since last night, and westerly winds with snow are blowing strongly. The Japan Meteorological Agency has announced that a cold front is expected to pass through the Hokuriku region and create a winter pressure pattern, so the forecast is cloudy until midday with thunderstorms, snow in the mountains in the evening, and snow on the plains in the evening.
