Travel and Terrain Advice

This is the "spring cycle" where snow cover intensity varies greatly between morning and mid-day. Climbers and skiers alike should be aware of slip drops in the morning. And notice that the intensity of the snowpack surface layer decreases as the temperature rises and the solar radiations. If you choose the right time of day and slope, you can safely enjoy comfortable granular snow. Snowmelt at lower elevations is progressing. Be on the lookout for glide avalanches and snow block collapses. Also, gullies are cracking and snow bridges are becoming brittle. There are more diverse hazards at lower elevations. Please communicate with your fellow skiers and avoid hazards.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (March 21), size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were observed in all aspects.

Snowpack

Snowpack is in a Melt-Freeze cycle, except on the northern slopes at higher elevations. The surface layer of snowpack is repeatedly frozen at night and Melt-Freezed during the day. As a result, the surface layer of snow changes to granular snow with large particle sizes. In addition, the entire snowpack is gradually warming up, and all layers are moving in the direction of isothermalization.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northerly winds during the day, cloudy, sunny before noon, and a maximum temperature of 21°C (13 m above sea level) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 2° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
