This is a "spring cycle" where snowpack intensity varies greatly between morning and daytime. Climbers and skiers alike should be aware of slip drops in the morning. And notice that the strength of the snowpack surface layer decreases with rising temperatures and solar radiation. The most important element of avalanche safety is terrain selection. It is important to stop in a safe place and enter avalanche terrain one at a time or at appropriate intervals. At higher elevations and on slopes that are not affected by solar radiation, there is snow within the new snow that has not yet gained sufficient strength. Be wary of slopes with convex or isolated terrain features that are difficult to support snowpack combined with wind slab formation due to north winds. Have a good day.
Watch for wind slabs formed on isolated terrain by the north winds. Within the new snow below the slab, there is snow that has not yet gained sufficient strength.
Note the effects of high daytime temperatures and solar radiation. Rating is as of morning.
Try to stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
Yesterday (March 19), a number of wet loose snow avalanches (size 1-2) were reported, with a variety of triggers, such as during snowfall on the 18th, natural triggering due to high temperatures and solar radiation on the 19th, or skier-triggered.
Snowfall (20-30 cm) caused by low pressure rapidly settled as of yesterday in areas where solar radiation and temperatures had a strong influence. It then lost strength on very steep southeast to south-facing slopes, causing numerous wet avalanches. There are still areas within this new snow that have not yet fully strengthened.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, later from the north, sunny, cloudy in the evening, and a high of 16°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -3.4°C (as of 5:00).
